Jennifer Harloff and Jeff Leech of Bowmanville, Ontario, are the proud parents of the first baby born at the Northumberland Hills Hospital in 2012.

The baby boy was welcomed into the world at 5:48 AM on Sunday, January 1st weighing 9 pounds and 8 ounces. A brother for three-year-old Madeline, he has been named Theodore Freeman Harloff-Leech.

Benefits directly related to the April 2010 integration with Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences were the focus of a presentation delivered to the December meeting of the Northumberland Hills Hospital Board of Directors by Scott Pepin, Director of NHH's Community Mental Health Services.

The NHH Board and management engaged Ontario Shores in June 2008 to conduct an operational review of hte mental health programs at NHH, explained Mr. Pepin.

What resulted was a comprehensive three-month review including a local service analysis and operational recommendations to enhance the program by increasing linkages with Ontario Shores, the regional mental health centre in Whitby.

Seven (7) confirmed cases of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus (VRE) have been identified on two medical units (2A and 2B) at Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH). The patients affected are not sick from the bacteria and are carriers only.

While not required to publicly report cases of non-symptomatic or dormant VRE, NHH has chosen to bring the outbreak to the public's attention in an effort to reiterate the importance of hand hygiene now and at all times in the hospital environment and community.

Local high school students interested in pursuing a career in the health care sector had an opporutunity to learn first-hand about their many options on Monday, November 28th.

For the seventh yar in a row, the Workforce Development Board (WDB) partnered with Northumberland Hills Hospital (NHH) to offer Adventures in Healthcare, a popular career symposium attended this year by eighty students.

The NHH Board has approved the 2012/2013 Operating and Service Plan for the hospital.

The Plan achieves the hospital's obligation to balance its budget in the next fiscal year while providing for:

- new investments to strengthen staff development and interprofessional practice;

- expansion of outpatient chemotherapy services;

- new investments in surgical services to strengthen the program; and,

- completion of a commitment originally made by the NHH Board in March 2010 to close NHH's 11 interim long-term care (nursing home) beds.

At a ceremony in downtown Toronto last night, Northumberland Hills Hospital's President and CEO Robert Biron was named the recipient of the 2011 Graduate Leadership Award from the Society of Graduates of the University of Toronto's Faculty of Medicine's Department of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation.
